The predecessor of chess was called Chaturnga and is believed to have been created in india  about  1500 years ago, although no proof has been found as to when it was created or who created it. Chess spread to Europe during the 10th century and became popular during Medieval times. From there Chess evolved, with very minor changes to the rules, and became the game it is today.
